On the Need for Greater Inclusivity at Pool Orgies

One of my favorite album covers is on a recording of Carl Orff’s cantata Carmina Burana. It shows what I take to be satyrs and nymphs at their leisure in a state of nature in and around a pool. One nymph looks politely uninterested at a gent embracing her from behind, another looks unenthused with an overforward wooer grabbing her by the ankle, while a third male exits the pool, darkly casting a jealous look back. It’s not an entirely inaccurate representation of relations among the sexes, equal parts love and war, push and pull, stimulation and boredom. Yet one can’t help but notice the lack of anything outside the traditional polarity. Say what you will about LGBTQQIAAPPO2S, but greater representation would surely liven up the mythological hot tub.
