A Quantum of Cool

Some songs are just cooler than others. “Come Together” by The Beatles, “Rhiannon” by Fleetwood Mac, “Bloodletting” by Concrete Blonde . . . These are concoctions that sit atop the seventh step of refinement ascending to the temple within which lies the essence of cool. Try as they might, philosophers attempting to define that essence as a certain effortlessness, a precise tweaking of the dials or a measure of countercultural swagger eventually find themselves confounded, for at the highest emanation the sublime lapis is ineffable. We should want it no other way, because cool is something you have to feel. You know it when you hear it.

Note: I wrote this for Medium.com. If you are reading this on another platform, it has been pirated. I quit the Medium Partner Program, so I’m not doing this for money. It is nice, however, to know someone’s reading, so please clap or comment to let me know somebody’s out there. Gladius adhuc lucet.

I write about the intersection of arts and ideas. Maybe some short book reviews for a while.
